As one of New Zealand’s largest Half Marathon events with approximately 3000 participants each year and widely regarded as “The Premier” Half Marathon event in New Zealand and one that has great prestige among competitive runners the Huntly Half Marathon has had a long and enviable history since it started back in March 1981.
Growing over the years to a peak of just over 3000 in 2010 and sustaining numbers between the 2000-3000 participant mark over the last decade when competition among events has dramatically increased is a testament to the tremendous job done by Hamilton Hawks and the high regard this event has around New Zealand.
The event involves the traditional Half Marathon distance of 21.1km which is officially measured and certified under ANZ standards by Hadley Craig. There is also a 10km option, new for 2013 will be a 5km and RUN kids 2km for Under 16 year olds.
The past winners of the event reads like a New Zealand Road running Hall of Fame from Sir John Walker in the early 1980’s to Dale Warrander in the 2000’s.
The Huntly Half Marathon sees huge community involvement from Huntly and the wider Waikato District Council region.
